On A Mission For Easier Driver Training

The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme and Mission Zero are working together to revise their work-related road risk training requirements, for van and light vehicle drivers.

This is the first time FORS and Mission Zero have worked together to develop a common approach for operators, training providers and contractual specifiers.

FORS is a nationally recognised accreditation programme that promotes best practice across the transport industry. It provides a framework for fleet operators to continually improve performance while helping create safer roads and more efficient operations.

Meanwhile, fabricator Sternfenster has achieved Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme Bronze Accreditation, demonstrating its commitment to maintaining high standards across all its transport operations.

Video training

FORS and Mission Zero are now providing a more accessible and flexible training route for drivers whose role requires only Category B driving licence entitlement. FORS approved training requirements have also been amended so eligible Category B drivers can now meet the requirement through Panoramic Interactive Video Training, providing interactive learning that can be delivered online or in a classroom.

John Moran, Chair of the FORS Governance and Standards Advisory Group, said: “This is an important development and a strong example of accreditation schemes working together in the interests of operators, drivers and road safety.

“FORS and Mission Zero have always maintained aligned work-related road risk training requirements. By working together on this change, the two schemes have introduced greater flexibility and accessibility for van and light vehicle drivers while retaining the purpose and quality of the training.”

Adi Wanford, Mission Zero Governance Board Member, said: “From my experience of managing a large, geographically dispersed van fleet, delivering consistent face-to-face training can be operationally challenging. A flexible online route will help operators reach more drivers while reducing avoidable travel and operational disruption. The change does not affect the current immersive training requirement for HGV and PCV drivers.”

Safety investment

Sternfenster’s Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme bronze accreditation in July of this year marked an important milestone in the company's ongoing investment in safety, compliance, operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.

"Achieving FORS Bronze is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved," said Nathan Court, the chief sales officer at Sternfenster. "The accreditation reflects the commitment, teamwork and professionalism that our colleagues have shown throughout the process. It's something the whole business can be proud of."

The accreditation recognises the company's approach to managing its fleet and transport operations, covering areas including driver management, vehicle safety, legal compliance, fuel efficiency and environmental performance.

"Our customers rely on us to deliver products safely, efficiently and on time," said Court. "FORS Bronze demonstrates the standards we have in place to support that commitment. It also gives us a strong foundation as we continue to improve every aspect of our transport operation."

The project was supported by teams across the business, with Sternfenster's Logistics and Loading Teams playing a particularly important role in preparing for the audit and embedding the processes required to achieve accreditation.

Improvement

Continuous improvement remains a key focus for Sternfenster, with the company regularly investing in its manufacturing processes, digital technology and customer service. Achieving FORS Bronze forms part of that wider strategy, helping ensure every stage of the customer journey is supported by dependable systems and consistently high standards.

Sternfenster has already begun working towards combined FORS Silver and Gold Accreditation as it continues to enhance its transport operations.
